how do i start a scrapbooking career?
hello everybody! i love to scrapbook and have been doing so since i was pregnant with my daughter 3 years ago. i have decided to kind of make it a “career” since i’m good at it and plenty of people have said they want me to scrapbook for them. so i wanted to know is there any way i can get my art out there? i don’t want to go the ebay route, but if i have to i will. i want to eventually start a business of making personal scrapbooks and selling them in stores, or custom making them for clients. maybe selling pre-made pages by themselves also. i know there are a lot of people that don’t have time to put their pics in a boring photo album let alone make something pretty with embellishments! so if you know a website i can post pics on or a website looking for scrapbook pages let me know :] thanks in advance guys!
I have been making custom scrapbooks for other people for nearly 4 years now. I love it! But it’s a lot of work and sacrifice to be successful. I wish I had more time to work on my own scrapbook pages.
The first thing you want to do figure out what you want to do exactly. Without a clear direction you will just stumble around and get lost in a sea of too many good ideas. If you want to make premade pages and sell them individually, then research where people buy those and who the audience is (probably other scrapbookers). If you want to make custom scrapbooks for the affluent community your marketing and research will be completely different because you will also need to “teach” your audience what a scrapbook is and convince them that they NEED one and that you should be the one to make it for them. So finding a direction is your first big decision.
Do some online searches for other people who are doing what you want to do. Generally a solid, professional business will have a website with all the information a client will need to know to order from them. See what others are doing and this will help you structure your plan. You’re welcome to start with my website: http://www.scrapbooksbypam.com .
Then talk to friends, family, co-workers, associates, everyone you know… .and tell them about your idea. Feel them out and get feedback on what they think. You might land a client or two this way. Or you could offer to make some scrapbook pages for these friends/family so you can practice using photos that are not your own. Some people actually find that they don’t like scrapbooking photos of people they don’t know. Take this into consideration.
You’ll also want to do some research about how to start a business in your area. If you live in the USA, check your state’s government website and do a search for “starting a business.” Also check with your local clerk’s office to see what is required to operate a home-based business in your town. Also figure out what you’ll need to worry about with regard to taxes and such. Then do some research about writing a business plan and figure out what your business-blueprint is going to be like – then start laying out your plans for your business so you can get started.
