Scrapbooking help?
Okay, I just started scrapbooking. I know a girl who does this for a living, she told me that not all acid free papers are the same and that I should only use her brand that she sells. Also, is fabric safe to use in a scrapbook? Are there acids in it that are harmful? Oh and can I use regular pens if Im not using them on the actual photographs? Please give me any info you have about this subject. Much thanks.
I am well aware that she is trying to make money to support her own scrapbooking habit. That is not my question. I am wondering if there is any truth to what she says about acid free papers not all being the same. She said that there are tolerable levels of acid in some papers and that its not regulated.
I’ve been scrapping for a few years now and here is what I know…
Paper-If a paper is acid free, it is acid free, period. You can use those papers safely in your scrapbook, not just ones sold by her company (CM?). CM likes to scare new scrappers by telling them to only use their albums, their paper, and no outside embellishments. This is simply a marketing ploy by them, you can use any products that are acid free in your scrapbook. If you are shopping at a scrapbook store, then the papers there are safe for you to use.
Paper & Acid-If you are really concerned about the acid level in a paper, you can do two things…one buy a pen that checks the acidity in a paper. (SB stores carry these). Two, you can get a spray that you lightly mist on paper with acid in it to make it safe for your scrapbook. I have used this when putting brochures or newspapers in my scrapbook.
Pens-Regular pens used on paper and not photos should be fine. One of the main issues with pens is that they could fade overtime.
Fabric-I know many people who do put fabric in their scrapbooks. It depends on the fabric whether or not it is safe. You can mist it with the spray too or just add it on the page and mat the photo on paper on top of the fabric.
