Lesson plans for adults with a disability?
I am currently writing programs for adults with a range of ages and disabilities. There are between 8 and 15 in a group. The program must run for 3 months one day a week for 2 hours. Does anyone have ideas that i could write a program on?
I have done Japan, The World, Safety and Scrapbooking so far.
Web sites are good but just a idea or two would be great. I’m a good writer i just need ideas to write on.
Here are some topics that I have used in working with adults who have developmental disabilities:
Nutrition – including planning, shopping for, and preparing meals
Exercise and fitness, including yoga and focused relaxation
Community access – what services, attractions, etc., are available in the local community and how can they be accessed (including public transit or paratransit). Visits to, or from community leaders and helpers (inc. law enforcement, fire dept., etc.)
Your own home state (or province, or whatever) – history, commerce, natural resources, etc.
Music appreciation – various styles of music, opportunities to see and try various instruments, guest musicians
Organize a project to benefit others in the community – I especially like this, because too often people with disabilities are not given the opportunity to be “givers.” It’s important for everyone to have the experience of doing good for others, rather than being seen as the recipient of others’ good deeds.
