Scrapbooking Shape Makers

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Mine was full of family time and I finally got a few hours to myself to do one of the things that I absolutely love to do…..read!  I love to get lost in a fictional storyline.  I especially love books that are in a series, although my husband has a different view.  He affectionately calls whatever series I am on “the homewrecker series” as I get so wrapped up in my book that the laundry, dishes, and cleaning fall to the wayside!  I try to control myself better now by saving most of my reading for the weekend when he is home to help out and at night before bed.  The other thing I love to do is scrapbook.  I love to create things on paper, using different color schemes and shapes to design something lasting.  I wonder what your hobbies might be.

I thought it would be fun to do a series on jewelry making!  I thought it would be helpful to know some basic tips on how to get started and the kinds of jewelry there are to make, what equipment you would need to get started and so forth.  When I think of jewelry making as a hobby from home or starting a small business, I think of beadwork.  As I have gotten into research, I have realized there are so many ways to make jewelry that I had never even thought about.

Today I thought we would take a quick look at the history of jewelry making.  Do you know where the word jewelry comes from?  I didn’t either, so I looked it up.  It is derived from the latin word “jocale” which means “plaything.”  During the early years, jewelry was used in more practical ways rather than for adornment as we mostly use it for now.  It was used to pin clothes together or for storage.  The first pieces of jewelry were made out of material such as shells, animal teeth and bones, carved stone and wood.

Jewelry has come a long way and it really was not until later in the 1800’s that jewelry makers started to make a name for themselves.   I am really looking forward to this series!  Tomorrow we are going to talk about basic tips on getting started as well as some supplies you would need to begin.
